چکیده

John R. Anderson is an international leader in the computational representation and simulation of human cognition. He is credited as having developed the first ‘‘cognitive architecture’’—a computational framework for specifying both the abilities and limitations of human behavior. Anderson has also made fundamental contributions in applying cognitive architectures to practical problems, most notably in the development of intelligent tutoring systems: computer-based tutors that continually infer the cognitive state of the student, striving to determine what the student knows and does not know, and targeting further instruction accordingly. For these achievements, Anderson was awarded the 2011 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science. & 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of The Franklin Institute

Ferroelectric liquid crystals: The 2004 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics presented to Robert B. Meyer of Brandeis University

In a theoretical examination of the structures of liquid crystal phases, Robert B. Meyer in 1975 creatively utilized symmetry arguments to predict that tilted, layered liquid crystal phases of chiral molecules are ferroelectric. He then engaged the help of organic chemists to synthesize a compound that might possess such a phase, and once the material was in his hands, Meyer not only verified i...

ACT-R: A Theory of Higher Level Cognition and Its Relation to Visual Attention

The ACT-R system is a general system for modeling a wide range of higher level cognitive processes. Recently, it has been embellished with a theory of how its higher level processes interact with a visual interface. This includes a theory of how visual attention can move across the screen, encoding information into a form that can be processed by ACT-R. This system is applied to modeling severa...
